If the Imams of the four schools (madhahib) established all of their rulings from the Qur’an and the Sunna, why have they differed on so many points? How can two authentic narrations from the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him an give hime peace) appear to contradict one another? When is it acceptable for Muslims to differ over religious matters? What did the Messenger (Allah bless him an give hime peace) mean when he said, “The differences of my Umma are a source of mercy?”

Using examples from the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him an give hime peace), his Companions, and their Followers, The Differences of the Imams answers these puzzling questions in a thorough and concise manner. In a clear and lucid style, the author illustrates the various ways in which different narrations seem to contradict one another and how the Companions and the Imams of jurisprudence have reconciled these apparent differences. This work is an excellent resource for anyone seeking to better understand some of the deeper issues of hadith and jurisprudence: how these two disciplines come together to form the basis of Islamic law [Shari’a], why it is necessary to follow a school of Islamic law, and what the basic principles of hadith scholarship are.

A Basic Hanafi Primer on Faith, Prayer, & the Path of Salvation. Compiled by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani, based on Shaykh Amin Jundi’s Islah ‘Ilm al-Hal.

Allah has commanded us to worship and obey Him, with sincerity, out of reverence, love, and thankfulness. He says in the Quran, “And they are ordered only to serve Allah, keeping religion pure for Him, to remain upright, and to establish worship and to pay the poor-due. That is true religion” (Quraan, 98.5).

This worship is not possible without knowledge. This short work outlines the absolute essentials of this knowledge: in faith, prayer, and key points related to ones life and dealings.

It is based on the methodology of traditional Sunni Islam, according to the Hanafi school, the largest school of Islamic law, and its purpose is to make ones worship valid, sound, and proper in a short amount of time.

The post The Absolute Essentials of Islam first appeared on Madni Kutub Khana.

The Four Imams – Their Lives, Works And Their Schools Of Thought.

This book is a compilation of four books which deal with the lives and works of the four imams who founded the four great canonical schools of thought of Islamic fiqh; Imam Abu Hanifah, Imam al-Shafi’i, Imam Malik Ibn Anas & Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal. The book was originally written in Arabic by the great Egyptian scholar and theologian Muhammad Abu Zahra and is presented in English for the first time.

In this book, there is a comprehensive, in depth analysis of the four Sunni madhabs and their founders, giving details of their biography and the methods they used in reaching their legal conclusions. This is particularly important important in the world today when many thousands of Muslims find themselves in a situation where there is not enough knowledge and therefore, no traditional allegiance to a particular madhab. As a result of this ignorance, there is also a great deal of futile disagreements amongst the Muslims. This work therefore has been long overdue in the English language and will be a milestone in bridging the gap amongst the Muslims and uniting them. It makes a stimulating and enriching read for all who are interested in deepening their knowledge of Islam.

This short treatise on ‘Aqida (Islamic theology) written by Imam al-Tahawi though small in size, is a basic text for all times, listing what a Muslim must know and believe.

The importance of this text lies in the fact that it corroborates the views of Imam Abu Hanifa the founder of the Hanafi school of jurisprudence, that have come down to us from different sources. Imam al-Tahawi summarizes the views of the great Imam and shows that they were in conformity with the traditional views of the orthodox school.

The doctrines enumerated in this work are entirely derived from the undisputed primary sources of religion, the Qur’an and the confirmed hadith.

This text, representative of the viewpoint of Ahl al-Sunna wa’l Jama’a, has long been the most widely acclaimed, and indeed indispensable, reference work on Muslim beliefs.

This edition includes a brief and simple commentary by Mawlana Fahim Hoosen. The focus in his commentary is explaining the correct belief of a Muslim while avoiding technical discussions and intricacies of debate around theological issues.

Hayaa’ itself is derived from the word hayaat which means life. This term covers a large number of concepts. In English, it may be translated as modesty, shyness, self-respect, bashfulness, shame, honour, etc. The original meaning of Hayaa’ in accordance with a believer’s nature, refers to a bad and painful feeling accompanied by embarrassment, caused by one’s fear of being exposed or censured for some unworthy or indecent conduct.

Islamically Hayaa’ is an attribute which pushes the believers to avoid anything distasteful or abominable. It keeps them from being neglectful in giving everyone what is due upon them, and if for any reason they are not able to keep up with their commitment then they will feel extremely bad and ashamed about this. The reason being that they will have displeased Allah by breaking a commitment.

Hayaa’ plays a vital role in the lives of Muslims because it is a very important part of our eeman (faith/belief). If we do not have any form of Hayaa’ in us then it is most likely that our eeman is very weak. For as it states in the following hadeeth (Prophetic Narration), narrated by Abu Huraira (radhiallahu `anhu): The Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) said, “Faith (Belief) consists of more than sixty branches (i.e. parts). And Hayaa’ (this term “Hayaa’” covers a large number of concepts which are to be taken together; amongst them are self-respect, modesty, bashfulness, scruple, etc.) is a part of faith.” (Bukhari)

The post Hayaa The Forgotten Branch of Imaan first appeared on Madni Kutub Khana.

The first chapter, Some Evidence for the Truth of Islam, answers some important questions which some people ask:

Is the Quran truly the literal word of God, revealed by Him?

Is Muhammad (S) truly a prophet sent by God?

Is Islam truly a religion from God?

In this chapter, six kinds of evidence are mentioned:

The Scientific Miracles in the Holy Quran

The Great Challenge to Produce One Chapter Like the Chapters of the Holy Quran

Biblical Prophecies on the Advent of Muhammad (S), the Prophet of Islam

The Verses in the Quran That Mention Future Events Which Later Came to Pass

Miracles Performed by the Prophet Muhammad (S)

The Simple Life of Muhammad (S)

From these six kinds of evidence, we conclude that:

The Quran must be the literal word of God, revealed by Him.

Muhammad (S) is truly a prophet sent by God.

Islam is truly a religion from God.

If we would like to know if a religion is true or false, we should not depend on our emotions, feelings, or traditions. Rather, we should depend on our reason and intellect. When God sent the prophets, He supported them with miracles and evidence which proved that they were truly prophets sent by God and hence that the religion they came with is true.

The second chapter, Some Benefits of Islam, mentions some of the benefits that Islam provides for the individual, such as:

The Door to Eternal Paradise

Salvation from Hellfire

Real Happiness and Inner Peace

Forgiveness for All Previous Sins.

The third chapter, General Information on Islam, provides general information on Islam, corrects some misconceptions about it, and answers some commonly asked questions, such as:

What does Islam say about terrorism?

What is the status of women in Islam?
